It’s essentially the same as Jason said “petroleum jelly”. This is the tub I leave in my tool box drawer with my other ingredients that I’ve found useful. Last time I used it I was seating a fresh sending unit gasket and use it was a lube on o rings and such too.

Assembly lube, everytime. Let me chime in about packing with grease. If you build a motor and it sits for a year or 10, that grease will eventually harden up and not be fluid anymore. I bought a crate motor for my DD Saturn and that dam thing would NOT pick up oil to save its life, nothing. The vendor had me jump thru hoops to check everything, including putting 3 extra qts of oil in just in case the oil pump pickup wasn't picking up. NOTHING.....so I finally told the store that I was a dissatisfied customer and got my $ back ( I farmed out the install since I work all day). Lost that money but come to find out, the rebuilder (POWER TORQUE, NEVER TRUST AGAIN) found that the oil pump was packed full of grease and it had hardened up, not allowing the pump to ever suck. Vasoline.....IDK, never used it. Again, Assembly Lube when it is new. After that it is just as described, like letting the car sit for a week, the residual oil is all that is left to help the pump prime.
